Generalized Anxiety Disorder

One of the most common mental illnesses I see in clinical practice is Anxiety. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, an estimated 2.7% of U.S. adults had generalized anxiety disorder in the past year. The disorder usually has its onset in late adolescence or early adulthood, although cases are generally seen in older adults. Also, some data suggests that the prevalence of generalized anxiety disorder is exceptionally high in primary care settings.

What is Generalized Anxiety Disorder?

Generalized Anxiety Disorder is defined as excessive anxiety and worry about several events or activities for most days during at least a 6-month period. The essential characteristics of generalized anxiety disorder are sustained, and excessive anxiety and worry accompanied by either motor tension ore restlessness. The worry is difficult to control and is associated with somatic symptoms, such as muscle tension and irritability.

What are symptoms of Generalized Anxiety Disorder?

Common symptoms include restlessness, feeling shaky, shortness of breath, rapid heartbeat, sweating and cold hands and feet, diarrhea, feelings of unreality, impaired attention and difficulty falling asleep.

How is Generalized Anxiety Disorder Treated?

When it comes to treating Generalized Anxiety Disorder the most effective treatment is the simultaneous use of pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy. Other treatments can include relaxation techniques or making lifestyle changes to reduce stress (which can be a main contributing factor) and avoid any substance use.

A lifestyle change that everyone is familiar with would be Exercise. Exercise improves quality of life through better physical function, reduced morbidities and yes you named it improved mental health. Exercise improves cognitive function and self-esteem. These effects can be described as neurochemically because exercise promotes secretion of neurotransmitters sch as serotonin.
